Voting age - weekly blog provocation

Hi there and welcome back to Week 2. Saturday was the final day for voting in this years General Election and Jacinda Ardern and the Labour Governement will continue to be in power for the next three years. Did you know that New Zealand was the first country in the world which allowed woman to vote? Before this only men 21 years of age and older were able to vote. Allowing woman to have a vote from 1893 was all thanks to a lady named Kate Sheppard. In 1969 the voting age was lowered to 20 and in 1974 it was lowered again to 18 years of age.
This weeks question to ponder is, do you think the voting age should be lowered? Some young people believe it should be lowered to 16. I look forward to hearing what you think.

Rich or happy?

Welcome back to Term 4, the last term of 2020! This term we are going to continue with our weekly blog provocation. I have really enjoyed reading your thoughts and I am impressed with the ways you are responding to other people's opinions.

This week's questions to get you thinking is, would you rather be rich or happy?

I look forward to seeing what you think and this term I am going to encourage you to take an opportunity to disagree with other's ideas. Don't forget you would only be disagreeing with a person ideas, not the person themselves. You may also find that sometimes you may only disagree with part of the person's point of view or can see apart from another point of view. Here are some sentence starters to help you out with your response.

Mask wearing

Coronavirus: Face masks of the Covid-19 pandemic have changed the face of our nation | Stuff.co.nz

Do you think it should be compulsory to wear a mask when you go to the supermarket?

From today, anyone over the age of 12 has to wear a mask on public transport regardless of what part of the country you live in. At the moment people are encouraged to wear a mask in public places like supermarkets. Do you think we should have to wear a mask in supermarkets or do you think it is safe enough without one?

Here is another fabulous example of the A-Z challenge from Drew. Drew has been doing a lot of reading in his free time about sharks so what better topic for his A-Z challenge. Drew has managed to find a shark-related word for every letter of the alphabet. I am so proud of how hard Drew has worked on this piece of learning. He has completed this distance learning task to such a high standard and I can tell how much effort he has put in. Go Drew!

Amazing ANZAC day Activities

Last week I gave Room 11 a choice of 6 different tasks all related to ANZAC day and learning more about why this day is so important to New Zealanders. I have been really impressed with the quality of their work and I want to share some of the best examples with you all. If you would like a closer look at the activities, check out the slide show below.

The first activity focused around listening to 'The last post' and thinking about how this piece of music made them feel. Here are Angel's thoughts.

"Hello Bloggers welcome back to my blog I am going to be showing you bloggers some work I have done today about Anzac day". We had 6 activities to do, here is my first activity. I am feeling happy that I have finished this work and also amazed. Here's my work.

"When I listen to the Last Post makes me feel sad because this is the remembrance of all the lives lost in the wars". "I think about the huge commitment that these armed forces made to protect our and other countries from invasion". "I think this is an important part of Anzac day because it is part of military tradition and signifies that the soldiers have gone to their final resting places".

Angel also went above and beyond with another ANZAC day activity and even designed her own brand new logo. She wrote "It centres around the poppies that grew around the graves of the fallen soldiers and how we remember them with imitation poppies, wreaths and other logo's"

Another task was to look at the role animals played during World War I and II. Below is what Rableen wrote about dogs during the war.

Rableen also made ANZAC cookies too. Here is her blog post about her baking

Hello everyone yesterday i made Anzac cookies but my mum got the recipe wrong so these are how they look like but they were yummy and hope you like them

Jherean's creative writing

Last week one of our distance learning tasks was to write a story on what life might be like for an animal at a zoo while they are closed for lockdown. This is the story Jherean wrote. As you can see this is not a short story. Jherean has taken his time to carefully think about the problem and solution in his story. He has used a clear beginning, middle and end. Well done Jherean, I hope you enjoy his story as much as I did

Hi guys so today's blog is my another writing which one of my task to do at home that the teacher set us to do.

So I have to make a story of a day in a life in a zoo.

Here are some things that we have to include and to add in our story.

Don’t forget to include…

  • A beginning, middle and end
  • Detail so that your reader gets a picture in your head.
  • Give your characters names and make sure we know what type of animals they are.
  • Be creative and have fun with your writing

In the middle of my story, I putted a problem and I also put a solving problem part. Here is my writing that I've done!

Beginning:

The sun was so  bright as the animals woke up and suddenly roared. It's time for their breakfast.
They went and ate food. They were eating quietly, until two panda fought because of food. The Giant
panda’s were fighting together with other animals. They were so loud, suddenly a cute roared heard
across the zoo. Everyone stopped and got shocked, they turned to look at who roared so loud and
cutely at the same time that nobody heard before. They suddenly saw a cute little newborn lion.
“Awwwww!!!” They all said.

Middle: Problem

The other animals were shocked that the cute lion was born. They seemed to notice that there was no
one with the little lion, they were confused. As soon as they realised that the little lion was sad, they
immediately knew what happened. The big lion roared as big as she could to get the attention of the
zookeeper. The zookeeper went and was a bit confused about why she roared.

The animals don’t know how to express to the zookeeper that they need something, how?

The zookeeper doesn’t know what she was talking about so he just went out and continued doing his
work. The big lion went and asked the giraffe for help. The giraffe carried the lion out of the fences as
the lion runned and followed the zookeeper. The zookeeper doesn’t seem to notice it.

Middle: Problem Solving

As the big lion keeps on following him, when he gets there, it leads to a place where there are a bunch of
lions and animals. It says….. FOR SALE???? And the lions were tied up? The big lion was quite
confused why, and suddenly, she finally gets what it means. The zookeeper was about to open the door
to get a lion because someone  was buying it. As he grabs one lion and about to close the door, the big
lion suddenly jumps in and bit the zookeepers. He seemed injured, she looked at the pity eyes of the
lions. She tried to untie them and she successfully did. The faces of the animals lit up as they thought
there was no chance of them getting away from the situation.

The mother of the little lion runned to where she left the baby. She kept on running until she found her
baby. She was happy, she immediately hugged her and smiled at her cuteness. Everyone gathered
up and showed a smile to the big lion as a thank you for her help, without her the lions could be apart
together with their families. They call the big lion a “Super Lion”.

Ending:
As the day continued, it was night, the zookeepers seemed to pity them and kind of regretting what
he had done. But at least, he won’t do that again, he promised himself. It was night, as they all slept
happily.. And they continue living with problems, with love and with care for each other.

I hope you enjoy my story and please give me a positive, helpful and thoughtful feedback. Bye!
